The national statistics on domestic abuse in England & Wales have been released today, confirming an ongoing national crisis of gender-based violence. In the last year, an estimated 2.3 million people aged 16 years and over (1.6 million women and 712,000 men) experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2024 – these figures are likely to only be the tip of the iceberg.

“Accurate data and reporting is essential to help us understand the scale of domestic abuse, and to support the ongoing struggle to ensure support services and interventions are adequately funded to respond to this national crisis,” said Maria Cripps, Assistant Director of Domestic Abuse at Cranstoun. “Once again, we are seeing laid out in detail the extraordinarily high number of people experiencing domestic abuse, and an increasingly high number of people engaging with services to change their harmful behaviour too. It is essential that we take a whole-society approach to ending this harm, and to never treat gender based violence as an inevitability.”
